How To Get 10k Steps During Lockdown

Ah lockdown, we meet again. More time sitting at home with the snacks in the cupboard calling your name, and to add salt to the wound, lockdown means less time up and about getting your daily steps in.

But don’t let your fitness become a thing of the past just because you’re at home.

Here are some creative ways to get your 10,000 steps a day in the comfort of your own home.

Fake Your Daily Commute

If you walk to the station and back every day, and that walk is 10 minutes each way, that’s 20 minutes of walking you are missing out on.

Each morning, get up and pretend like you’re going to work, pop the tv or the radio on, and do your steps in the living room like you were going to work. If you have a backyard, pop your timer on and do laps around the backyard until you reach the same number of steps you would do on a normal (non lockdown) day.

Have 'Walk and Talk Meetings

If your phone rings, or you have planned meetings, make them a walk and talk meetings. Walk around the house or backyard while on the phone and you will be surprised how many steps you can get without even realising! A simple 15 minute walk and talk meeting can add around 1,200 steps to your daily total.

Microwave Minutes

While your food is in the microwave, or the kettle is boiling, walk around! Don’t just stand there, that’s wasting step minutes! You can always spice it up and do some squats, lunges or if you’re game, some star jumps. No burpees though, nobody likes burpees.

One Plate At A Time

When putting away the dishes, put one dish away at a time. Trust me, the steps add up, especially if you have a big family. You can also do this with clothes. Either leave the washing basket in the lounge room and put one piece of clothing away at a time, or leave it on the line and do the same. Two birds, one stone! Pop some music on and make it fun!

Ad Break Steps

I did this the other day with my partner. We were watching Law & Order and every ad break we got up and walked around the lounge room. After the episode, we clocked up 2000 steps! You can also make it fun! If you have kids you can play hide and seek, or even freeze.

YouTube DanceFitness Party

If you haven’t checked out Youtube and the amazing array of dance/fitness classes they have on there, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN! There are so many great channels that have gym classes that you can follow on within the comfort of your own home! If you have a smart TV you can stream it in the lounge room and go for gold! Some of my favourite channels include PopSugar Fitness, My Fitness Marshall and growwithjojo.

Make Excuses To Move

If you have an upstairs bathroom, make a promise to yourself that you will go up and use it instead of the downstairs one. Use this example and adapt it to your own house and promise yourself you will do it to get those steps in.

Just in case you weren’t motivated enough, here are some benefits of getting 10,000 steps a day:

  • Boost energy

  • Aids in relaxation and clearing your mind

  • Provides a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

  • Improves confidence and mood.

  • Help manage your weight.

  • Promote healthier blood cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • Helps build stronger bones and muscles.

  • Reduces your risk of heart attack

Get up, and get stepping!
